Alice Gauthey et une \u00e9quipe de l&rsquo;EPFL et de l&rsquo;Institut f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de recherches sur la for\u00eat, la neige et le paysage ont pu \u00e9tudier ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne en France durant la canicule de 2023: dans des parcelles de for\u00eat de ch\u00eanes verts, le thermom\u00e8tre a grimp\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 50 degr\u00e9s Celsius, les temp\u00e9ratures les plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es jamais mesur\u00e9es \u00e0 cet endroit. Les r\u00e9sultats de leur recherche viennent de para\u00eetre dans Global Change Biology.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;objectif des scientifiques \u00e9tait de suivre les variations de la temp\u00e9rature de la canop\u00e9e au cours de la journ\u00e9e et de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9. Ils ont eu recours \u00e0 des drones \u00e9quip\u00e9s de cam\u00e9ras thermiques infrarouges, qui ont survol\u00e9 des for\u00eats en Suisse, en France et en Espagne lors de journ\u00e9es chaudes et ont enregistr\u00e9 la temp\u00e9rature \u00e0 la face sup\u00e9rieure des feuilles. Ils ont \u00e9galement mesur\u00e9 la photosynth\u00e8se et la transpiration dans les feuilles \u00e0 la cime des arbres. Une grue a \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire pour acc\u00e9der au sommet des canop\u00e9es car les ch\u00eanes sessiles (Quercus petraea) du Jura b\u00e2lois atteignent une bonne trentaine de m\u00e8tres de haut. En France, les scientifiques ont utilis\u00e9 des \u00e9chafaudages pour effectuer des mesures sur les ch\u00eanes verts (Quercus ilex). En Espagne, aucune aide n&rsquo;a \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire, les ch\u00eanes kerm\u00e8s (Quercus coccifera) ne d\u00e9passant gu\u00e8re 1,5 m\u00e8tre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>50 degr\u00e9s \u00e0 la surface des feuilles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Les r\u00e9sultats montrent que les ch\u00eanes peuvent r\u00e9sister \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures impressionnantes. \u00abAu sommet de la canop\u00e9e, les feuilles ont atteint 50 degr\u00e9s Celsius en ao\u00fbt, ce qui est tout \u00e0 fait incroyable\u00bb, explique Charlotte Grossiord, responsable de l&rsquo;\u00e9tude et professeure assistante tenure track au sein de la Facult\u00e9 de l&rsquo;environnement naturel, architectural et construit (ENAC) de l&rsquo;EPFL et \u00e9cologue foresti\u00e8re au WSL. Et ce, alors que la temp\u00e9rature de l&rsquo;air n&rsquo;\u00e9tait \u00abque\u00bb de 40 \u00e0 42 degr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Comment les ch\u00eanes ont-ils surv\u00e9cu \u00e0 de telles conditions? Ce qui les a sauv\u00e9s, c&rsquo;est probablement leur extr\u00eame tol\u00e9rance \u00e0 la chaleur. Pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 cette question, les scientifiques ont expos\u00e9 les feuilles \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures croissantes dans un bain d&rsquo;eau, tout en mesurant la fa\u00e7on dont la chaleur d\u00e9truisait l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 photosynth\u00e9tique dans les cellules. \u00abNous avons constat\u00e9 que le seuil critique de temp\u00e9rature se situe \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 50 degr\u00e9s Celsius\u00bb, commente la chercheuse. (c) EPFL \/ Charlotte Grossiord<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Le fait qu&rsquo;ils aient rarement atteint ce niveau est probablement d\u00fb \u00e0 un autre processus: les mesures montrent que les feuilles perdent toujours un peu d&rsquo;eau. En effet, par temps chaud, les arbres ferment \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9 les pores \u00e0 la face inf\u00e9rieure de leurs feuilles, par lesquels ils absorbent et lib\u00e8rent des gaz. Mais une faible quantit\u00e9 d&rsquo;eau s&rsquo;\u00e9vapore passivement \u00e0 travers la surface des feuilles. Les deux processus, actif et passif, jouent un r\u00f4le, explique Charlotte Grossiord, car ils refroidissent les feuilles juste ce qu&rsquo;il faut. Seules les feuilles les plus expos\u00e9es au sommet de la canop\u00e9e sont devenues brunes et s\u00e8ches.<\/p>\n<p>La tol\u00e9rance \u00e0 la chaleur de ces ch\u00eanes est nettement sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle de certains conif\u00e8res \u00e9valu\u00e9s pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment en Suisse, observe Charlotte Grossiord. Toutefois, la morphologie des conif\u00e8res, avec leurs fines aiguilles et leurs branches clairsem\u00e9es, emp\u00eache le d\u00e9veloppement de temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eames dans les aiguilles, comme l&rsquo;ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 les \u00e9tudes ant\u00e9rieures men\u00e9es par l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe dans le Bois de Finges, en Valais.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Les feuillus sont moins tol\u00e9rants \u00e0 la chaleur<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Les r\u00e9sultats sugg\u00e8rent que les essences feuillues souffriront de la multiplication des vagues de chaleur. \u00abCertaines essences risquent d&rsquo;atteindre leurs limites si les vagues de chaleur deviennent plus extr\u00eames\u00bb, pr\u00e9cise Charlotte Grossiord. Cela s&rsquo;est d\u00e9j\u00e0 produit en Suisse au cours de l&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 2018, lorsque de nombreux h\u00eatres se sont dess\u00e9ch\u00e9s sur des sols stockant mal l&rsquo;eau. Il est crucial de comprendre ce qui se passe lorsque la s\u00e9cheresse est aggrav\u00e9e par des temp\u00e9ratures tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9es, souligne la chercheuse. La tol\u00e9rance maximale \u00e0 la chaleur des arbres des r\u00e9gions fra\u00eeches comme la Scandinavie n&rsquo;est que de 35 degr\u00e9s Celsius, alors que certaines plantes tropicales peuvent supporter pr\u00e8s de 60 degr\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>De nombreuses techniques sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 utilis\u00e9es dans l&rsquo;agriculture pour \u00e9viter la surchauffe des plantes, ajoute Charlotte Grossiord. Par exemple, des cam\u00e9ras infrarouges enregistrant la temp\u00e9rature de surface des champs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es pour d\u00e9terminer les besoins d&rsquo;irrigation des cultures.
